We recover our plastics through various clean up programs. Twice a month through our Adopt-a-Road program we collect all trash from the roadsides. All waste is delivered to the municipal dump, all recycling is picked up accordingly and all wasted plastic is processed at the ECOblock facility.
80% of the 550 tons of plastic discarded daily in Costa Rica reaches our oceans. Recycling is not the solution to this problem. It’s stopping our overconsumption and repurposing all the wasted plastic into a more valuable product such as the ECOblock.
Our final stage consists of using the ECOblocks to build a home for a family in need. Each home will contain upwards of 1/2 a ton of repurposed plastic. We utilize the waste stream of one industry to become the value stream of another.
The technology that converts discarded plastic into an aggregate for the production of cinder blocks was patented in Costa Rica. The main production of this product is managed by the Pedregal construction company. Click below to learn more about this revolutionary process.
As an organization we exist to clean up our beautiful country of Costa Rica while providing a viable solution to the issue of single-use plastics. We accomplish this by converting plastic waste into an aggregate that makes traditional construction cinderblocks. We then utilize these cinderblocks, called ECOblocks, to build homes for local families in need. Having started with the goal of becoming packaging-neutral through the local hot sauce brand Ricante, our organization has broadened its reach to create a true circular economy through its plastic to homes program. We are now a fully compliant 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization enabling us to increase awareness and bring funds to bear on the issues of plastic waste and homelessness.
